Papers relating to the 4th Earl's service as Military Secretary to the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, Governor-General of Canada, 1883 -5. His main preoccupations were with the raising of a voyageur force for service in Egypt, the employment of Canadian forces in the imperial service, and the rebellion of Louis Riel in the North-West in which he was personally involved. Also includes a published account of suppressing the North West Rebellion dating from 1886 and a detailed timeline of events that took place during the rebellion.
