You are here: Gambia under colonial rule, in Government reports, 1881-1966 : Natural resources

The authorities in the Gambia were working in an area where food supplies were not always sufficient; in order to address this, they invested considerable resources in areas of agriculture and farming that were likely to increase the food supply. Direct investments supported fisheries, rice farming, and veterinary care for cattle. The botanic station was created in order to teach new farming techniques to the populace and the groundnut crop was a priority due to its value as a cash crop.
