Preston North End Vs Huddersfield Town – 29th April, 1922

The 1922 FA Cup Final between Huddersfield Town and Preston North End was played at Stamford Bridge. the only goal of the game, came from a penalty taken by Billy Smith and Huddersfield won by a single goal.

This was the last final before the opening of Wembley Stadium, and was also Huddersfield’s first and only FA Cup win. Preston goalkeeper James Mitchell was the first (and only) player ever to wear glasses in an FA Cup Final. It was the first final to be decided by a penalty kick and the award of it was controversial. It was said that the foul had occurred outside the penalty area and video footage has since confirmed this to be the case.
